There was a bomb threat to the QE2 ocean liner after a £130,000 ransom demand was received, although a search of the vessel found nothing of concern.

The number of unemployed fell under one million people, with the figures falling to 901,952 individuals who were seeking employment. Edward Heath, the Prime Minister,  (pictured) said “the reduction of 103,000 unemployed in one month is proof of the effectiveness of our policies”.

IRA prisoners seized Mountjoy prison in Dublin, causing substantial damage to the building.
