The situation in Belfast deteriorated as Protestant and Catholics clashed in a number of incidents, including an IRA gunman firing a gun into a large group of Protestant workers leaving Mackie’s engineering works.

Reg Maudling (in photo), the Home Secretary, said to the Police Federation in Eastbourne that Britain had become “violent and permissive”, adding that “we must all come together and say, this violence, this crime, this dirt must stop”.
