Trade union members in Hull said that they would ignore a court order telling them to stop accepting container lorries from entering the docks. The union members belonged to the Transport and General Workers Union which had already been fined £55,000 by the courts for illegal activities.

Seventeen people, including three children, were injured after a bomb exploded outside the Bluebell pub in Sandy Row in Belfast.

Stanley McMaster, the Ulster Unionist MP for Belfast East, said that civil war could break out in Northern Ireland unless the British army entered ‘no-go areas’.
