27 March 1922

Against the will of the Dáil Eireann, the Irish Parliament, the IRA Convention took place in Dublin, breaking the previous loyalty shown by the republicans to the Parliament.

The result of the by-election in Chertsey, caused by the death of the sitting MP Sir Donald Macmaster, was announced with the Unionist Philip Wigham Richardson winning with a majority of 2,321 votes over the Liberal Party’s Sir Hubert Gough.
