Despite fears to the contrary, the Government confirmed that insurance benefits for the unemployed would not reduced for the year ahead.

Talking with reference to the growing problems in Ireland, Winston Churchill said “Will they shatter the country’s prosperity with the quarrels of a bygone age, with vile persecutions and counter persecutions, with corroding hatred such as we in Great Britain have not known in our island for many generations? Will they sink in a welter of strife, or will they rise, hopeful and faithful, to the bright future of peace and freedom which is in within their grasp?”.
