Dom Mintoff, the Prime Minister of Malta, was reported to be in Tripoli for discussion with Colonel Gaddafi about replacing the loss of cash being caused by British troops withdrawing from the island. Mintoff had demanded substantial additional payments from the British for the military to be continued, which were denied by Edward Heath (in above photo), the Prime Minister.

The first photos of Justin Trudeau were published in the media, the son of the then Canadian Prime Minister Pierre and Margaret Trudeau. Justin Trudeau became the Prime Minister himself in 2015.

Trade union leaders said that a national strike of miners would go ahead on 9 January 1972 following their rejection of a 7.1% pay offer.
