Germany announced that the Cabinet had accepted the ultimatum issued by the Allies.

The Government said that it would not allow the trade unions to limit the supply of coal as part of their dispute against their employers, noting “we will not let public services suffer”.

Two police constables were shot dead by rebels in Clonmany in County Donegal.

Sir James Craig, who was taking over as the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, said that he was honoured to take on the role and that he would “never bow to any treachery or allow the very whisper of a Republic to enter his thoughts”.
