The Government issued a proclamation under the Emergency Powers Act 1920 following a widespread strike in the mining industry which threatened to close a large number of mines.
A group of Irish republicans attacked an army barracks in West Cork, eventually overcoming it and killing or injuring the soldiers inside.
Austen Chamberlain was returned unopposed in the by-election in West Birmingham.
