It was reported that James Chichester-Clark (in main image above) would remain as the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland as negotiations with Edward Heath, the Prime Minister, over troops numbers continued. Downing Street confirmed that Lord Carrington, the Secretary of State for Defence, would visit the province the following day to discuss matters.

Enoch Powell, the then Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West, called on the Government to take stronger action in Northern Ireland and said that “the army must be used against the terrorists in a way an attack by an external enemy would be resisted”.
