Sir Keith Joseph (in main image above), the Secretary of State for Social Services, said in the House of Commons that he was encouraging insurance companies to offer cheaper rates for non-smokers. He also added that he was asking cinemas, theatres and public transport operators to consider providing more space for those who wanted to sit in no smoking areas.

The Government confirmed that it intended to consider sending more troops to Northern Ireland following talks between Edward Heath, the Prime Minister, and James Chichester-Clark, the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.
