Lord Peter Carrington (in main image above), the Secretary of State for Defence, confirmed that no soldiers under the age of 18 would be sent on operations in future, following the murder of a 17-year old soldier in Belfast.

There were concerns that the entire production of Austin Morris could be brought to a standstill following a threatened strike of 320 lorry drivers who were based at Longbridge.

Sir Keith Joseph, the Secretary of State for Social Services, said that agreement had been reached with the manufacture of cigarettes to place health warnings on packets.
