Edward Heath (in main photo above), the Prime Minister, told union leaders at the TUC conference that inflation needed to be reduced before the economy could expand. Vic Feather, the TUC General Secretary, said “I did not get the impression that the Government has any intention to reflate the economy at this stage”.

Britain’s trade figures were published, showing a monthly deficit of £63 million, which the Government said was worsened by the ongoing national postal strike.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the Foreign Secretary, said that the group of 6 countries in the European Economic Community needed to hasten their processes and answer outstanding questions from the Government over the UK’s membership.
