The Government confirmed that the company in financial straits that it had been discussing was Rolls Royce, as it collapsed into receivership. The Government said that the engine plants of the company were to be taken over by the Government and would be run as a nationalised industry.
Anwar Sadat (in main image above), the President of Egypt, said that the country would open the Suez Canal up again if Israel agreed to withdraw from occupied Arab territory, including Arab Jerusalem, the West Bank of the Jordan, the Gaza Strip, Sinai and the Syrian Golan Heights.
Vic Feather, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said that the movement was “not sure that Britain’s Common Market entry is either certain or desirable”.
