Number organisations asked the Government to remove credit restrictions on businesses as the national postal strike prevented payments from arriving. The lack of payment and ability to use the postal service were causing serious financial issues for some businesses and there was a concern that some might not survive if the matter wasn’t resolved promptly. Robert Carr, the Secretary of State for Employment (in main photo above), said that he hoped that the dispute would be brought to an end soon.
Representatives from the car industry called on the Government to do more to protect the domestic car market after figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed that nearly 20% of vehicles were now being imported. They said that although fleet sales remained hopeful, it hoped that some relaxation to restrictions for the home market would be made.
