Michel Barnier Named by European Commission to Lead Brexit Negotiations

Michel Barnier has been named by the European Commission to represent them in negotiations with the UK over Brexit. Barnier will take over his new role on 1 October 2016, but will not begin any negotiations until the British Prime Minister signs Article 50.

Barnier said on Twitter:

“Honoured to be entrusted UK negotiation by @JunckerEU and @EU_Commission. Rendez-vous for beginning of demanding task on 1 October”.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, said:

“I am very glad that my friend Michel Barnier accepted this important and challenging task. I wanted an experienced politician for this difficult job”.
