Mike Ashley, the founder of Sports Direct, has admitted that mistakes were made when he appeared in front of a select committee today. Ashley had previously refused to accept an invitation to answer questions from the Business, Skills and Innovation Committee.
Ashley confirmed that staff weren’t paid the minimum wage due to time taken for them to go through a security checkpoint at the end of each shift. Staff were also fined for late arrival and could be dismissed for six minor infringements. Ashley accept that errors were made and that he was seeking to rectify them.
Ashley said that a new management structure might be required and said:
“I can accept the criticism of some of the things that you’ve said to me today would actually lead me to believe that it’s definitely outgrown me”.
