Government Clarifies Remarks Made by Conservative Minister Penny Mordaunt

David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has corrected remarks made by Penny Mordaunt, a Defence Minister, that the UK Government couldn’t stop Turkey joining the EU.

Mordaunt said:

“This referendum is our last chance to have a say on this, we’re not going to be consulted on whether those countries should join. Those countries are going to join”.

The Prime Minister said in an interview on ITV with Robert Peston:

“She is absolutely wrong. Let me be clear, Britain and every other country in the EU has a veto on another country joining. That is a fact”.
