James Duddridge, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has criticised the Gambian Government following violence at electoral reform protests.
Duddridge said in a statement:
“I am deeply concerned over allegations of excessive violence and ill treatment of those in custody following peaceful demonstrations in The Gambia.
The United Kingdom calls on The Gambian authorities to investigate these claims in a thorough and transparent manner, ensuring that anyone responsible for any wrongdoing is held accountable and brought to justice.
Those in custody should either be charged or released immediately and be treated in accordance with internationally acceptable human rights standards”.
