Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has said that President Barack Obama is a “hypocrite” for supporting the UK’s membership of the European Union.
In an interview with the BBC Johnson said:
“I just find it absolutely bizarre that we are being lectured by the Americans about giving up our sovereignty and giving up control when the Americans won’t even sign up to the international convention on the law of the seas, let alone the International Criminal Court”.
A spokesman for the White House confirmed that the President may make a personal statement supporting the UK remaining in the EU, but that the decision would be entirely a matter for the British people.
The vote on whether the UK should remain in the EU will take place on 23 June 2016.
