Mark H Durkan, the Northern Ireland Environment Minister, has apologised for any offence caused after making what he intended to be a light hearted comment at an event at a women’s event.
When asked about abortion Durkan replied:
“Now to talk about the elephant in the room – or, the elephant in the womb”.
Durkan apologised for his comments saying on BBC Radio:
“I made a clumsily attempt to bring a bit of levity to a very serious discussion that was ill-judged and I apologise for any upset caused”.
Julia Kee, the Ulster Unionist candidate for the constituency of Foyle, said:
“It was probably the most heinous comment I’ve heard”.
