Ellie Reeves, the Labour MP for Lewisham West and Penge, is facing a deselection challenge from her local constituency Labour Party. Reeves, who is currently pregnant, faces the challenge as she signed a letter calling for Chris Williamson to be deselected.
Jonathan Ashworth, the Shadow Secretary of Health, said in a statement:
“My friend Ellie Reeves is a socialist, an ex-trade union lawyer who fought against injustices for working-class people. She’s campaigned against oppression internationally, eg trade unionists in Colombia for years. An excellent MP. Ludicrous no-confidence motion should be binned.”
Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party, is under pressure to suspend Chris Williamson, the Labour MP for Derby North, from the party. Tom Watson, the party’s deputy leader, and ninety other Labour MPs and Peers have written a letter to Corbyn asking for him to take action.
Watson posted the below on Twitter:
The letter says:
“We call on Jeremy Corbyn to show leadership by asking for this inappropriate, offensive and reputationally damaging decision to be overturned and reviewed. Ultimately, it is for Jeremy Corbyn to decide whether Chris Williamson retains the Labour whip. He must remove it immediately if we are to stand any hope of persuading anyone that the Labour party is taking antisemitism seriously”.
Williamson had earlier posted on Twitter following his readmission to the party:
“I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks for the avalanche of goodwill messages from grassroots members. I can now focus on representing local people in Derby Nth and working for a Corbyn-led Labour govt to positively transform the lives of millions. Together anything is possible!”.
Chris Williamson, the Labour MP for Derby North, has been suspended from the party after allegations that he made antisemitic comments. Williamson, who has denied the allegations, will be suspended until investigations are completed.
Tom Watson, the deputy leader of the party, condemned the words used by Williamson, saying:
“Chris Williamson has produced a long-winded and heavily caveated apology. It is not good enough. If it was in my gift I would have removed the whip from him already.”
The Board of Deputies of British Jews also condemned Williamson, saying:
“We reject Chris Williamson’s half-hearted apology, which appears in any case to have been written by someone else.”
Chris Williamson, the Labour MP for Derby North, has proposed the idea of train carriages only for women. The idea has though been rejected by a number of other Labour MPs and also by equality groups. Williamson said that “female only carriages is an idea worth exploring” although he said that he added that he wasn’t necessarily calling for them to be introduced, just for there to be a debate.
Jess Phillips, the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, posted on Twitter:
“My hot take on women’s only carriages. Absolutely terrible idea. It is essentially giving up on trying to prosecute assaults”.
The campaigning group End Violence Against Women said:
“What happens when a woman doesn’t opt to use a segregated carriage – is she somehow to blame if she is then attacked?”
A spokesman for ASLEF, the rail union, also rejected the idea and said that “every space on the train should be safe”.
Chris Williamson, the Labour MP for Derby North and Shadow Home Office Minister, has condemned the United States sanctions which have been imposed on Venezuela. He added that the United States “had a shady record, going back many decades, of interfering in Latin America”.
Williamson said on BBC’s Newsnight:
“Surely it would be far better to try and bring the sides together, to facilitate talks and to encourage the right wing opposition to stop these protests on the streets”.
Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, had warned about the situation in the country last week.
