Lord Maginnis Faces 18 Months Ban from House of Lords After Bullying and Hate Speech

Lord Maginnis, who as Ken Maginnis was the MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone between 1983 and 2001, faces an eighteen month suspension from the House of Lords following a standards report conclusion that he was guilty of using hate speech and bullying staff.

There were four complaints made about Maginnis and the Commissioner found that:

(i) Lord Maginnis bullied Christian Bombolo, a security officer at the Houses of Parliament, and breached the Code of Conduct.

(ii) Lord Maginnis bullied and harassed Hannah Bardell MP and breached the Code of Conduct.

(iii) Lord Maginnis harassed Luke Pollard MP and breached the Code of Conduct.

(iv) Lord Maginnis harassed Toby Perkins MP and breached the Code of Conduct.

The House of Lords will decide on 7 December 2020 whether to implement the recommendations of the committee. Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster, Maginnis said that “I’ve held responsible positions all my life” and rejected the committee’s proposal that he should take part in behaviour training.
