20 May 1920

The media reported that a land court was held by Sinn Fein in County Mayo and this stated that the “highest authority in the land” was the Dáil Éireann. This Parliament had first been established on 21 January 1919, but at this stage hadn’t been recognised by the UK or any other Government. Following the independence of the southern part of Ireland in 1922, it became the Lower House of the Irish Parliament.

The Soviet Bolshevik army made a surprise attack on Anzali, a city then in Persia and which is today in Iran. The army attacked the port and captured the British garrison, as well as eighteen White Russian ships. The White Russians were the anti-communist troops fighting for the country, against the communist Red Army.
