Permanent Secretary at the Home Offices Resigns

Sir Philip Rutnam, the Permanent Secretary at the Home Office, has resigned and said that he will taking the Government to court for constructive dismissal. Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, who was forced to resign from her Cabinet post for serious breaches of the Ministerial Code in 2017, is under pressure to resign again over the nature of the allegations being made against her.

Rutnam said “in the last 10 days, I have been the target of a vicious and orchestrated briefing campaign” and said that he wasn’t given help. Rutnam also said that he has been made the victim of false allegations and that the Home Secretary was unwilling to engage with him about the matter. Rutnam added her behaviour was “part of a wider pattern in government”.

Patel is yet to comment.
