Richard Burgon, the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, has warned that the situation in UK prisons is “more dangerous than ever”. He was reacting to the Safety in Custody Statistics released by the Ministry of Justice which showed that there were 28,165 assaults against staff in England and Wales, up 12% in a year.
In a statement Burgon said:
“The chaos the Tories have created in our prisons is a national scandal. Their reckless cuts to staffing and budgets have left our prisons more dangerous than ever. Every few months ministers claim they are finally starting to get this situation under control, but every few months the number of assaults reaches a new record high. This is a prisons crisis of the Tories’ making and instead of simply reshuffling ministers they must urgently step forward with new proposals to stop this crisis spiralling further out of control”.
