Stephen Hammond, a former Conservative Minister and the current MP for Wimbledon, has said on Sky News that he thinks the Government’s decision to put the leaving date from the EU into UK law is “madness”.
During an interview with Niall Paterson, Hammond said, referring to the chances of no deal:
“We have to make provision for it and accept it is a possibility. And we have to accept, actually, by putting this date on the front of the bill, unfortunately you’ve made that more likely”.
Theresa May, the Prime Minister, had said on 10 November 2017:
“[The date] will be there in black and white on the front page of this historic piece of legislation”.
