Philip Hammond, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has said that the transition following the UK leaving the EU will be completed by 2022. He added that there would be a transitional period following the leaving of the EU in late March 2019.
Hammond, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, said that in the short-term there would be minimal changes:
“It will be some time before we are able to introduce full migration controls between the UK and the European Union. We have to put in place new infrastructure, new IT systems, new people. The home Secretary and the Prime Minister have been clear this will take a while to put in place”.
“I think there’s a broad consensus that this process has to be completed by the scheduled time of the next general election which is in June 2022”.
