Nick Clegg, the former Deputy Prime Minister and current Liberal Democrat spokesman on Europe, is to speak at the party conference about the need for the UK to remain in the European single market.

Clegg is expected to say:

“It is entirely possible to be in the single market but out of the EU, as Norway has shown. While it is undoubtedly an inferior option compared to full EU membership, it is the only option that would safeguard jobs and prosperity”.

The debate is continuing at the party conference on how best the Liberal Democrats can put pressure on the Government to maintain links with other European Union countries. Tim Farron, the party leader, has suggested that a second referendum might be a consideration, whereas Vince Cable, the former Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, has said that the focus should be on the negotiations themselves.
