The Labour NEC has decided in a secret vote to let Jeremy Corbyn, the current party leader, to automatically go on the ballot for the upcoming Labour leadership election. The committee voted by 18 to 14 to let Corbyn’s name automatically go forwards for a vote by party members.
The party said in a statement:
“The NEC has agreed that as the incumbent leader Jeremy Corbyn will go forward onto the ballot without requiring nominations from the Parliamentary Labour Party and the European Parliamentary Labour Party. All other Leadership candidates will require nominations from 20% of the PLP and EPLP”.
Angela Eagle has already stated that she intends to contest the leadership contest, and Owen Smith is also likely to do so.
